High Traits
One of the physical types, the skin meridian is revered in the US for its athleticism, risk-taking, luck, and high-energy levels. Suited to work in the stock exchange or as a skilled healer, this meridian meets demanding and strenuous situations head-on. Community is important to them and they are very intuitive in their relationships.
Low Traits
On the flip side, the skin meridian can be antisocial and sadistic. They can lack common sense and fall into bad habits such as gambling.
Skin Functions
Western Medicine
The skin helps regulate body temperature and is our immune system’s first line of defense against outside dangers such as sunlight, harmful chemicals, viruses, and bacteria. In the case of bacteria, the skin secretes antibacterial substances which keep us from getting infections. The skin is in constant communication with the brain, alerting it to potentially dangerous threats from our environment.
Our largest organ also makes vitamin D which our body uses to build strong bones and a healthy immune system. While in western medicine, the skin organ is considered independently from the immune and lymphatic systems, in eastern medicine all three are linked. All three systems protect our bodies from outside dangers. They produce and carry fluids that help neutralize harmful substances within our bodies.
Eastern Medicine
The skin meridian follows the same meridian line as the triple warmer. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the three “burners” are located in the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis. The upper controls intake, the middle digestion/transformation, and the bottom elimination. This meridian is a key component of our immune system and includes the functions of the lymphatic system. It controls the flow of nourishing energy (ying qi) and protective energy (wei qi) throughout our energetic body.
